Is Technology Causing Problems in Your Marriage?
Technology can be a wonderful thing. It allows us to communicate with friends and family members easily, it makes purchases easier at the store and it makes our workplaces more efficient. However, technology has a dark side too, and if you’re experiencing problems in your marriage because of things like social media and texting, you’re certainly not alone.
As a Christian Marriage Coaches and Counselors we’ve worked with many individuals and couples who have dealt with issues surrounding technology. Let’s take a closer look at some of the repeat offenders and identify the problems associated with each one.
THE INTERNET
We use the Internet every day of our lives. It can be a useful tool, but many people use it excessively, which can cause marital problems. Perhaps you can relate, and you’ve experienced situations when your spouse refuses to come to bed because of an interesting article he’s reading. Or maybe your wife really enjoys shopping online, and when you want to spend time with her in the evenings, she’s too busy researching the best deals. The Internet has proven to be a real time-waster, and if you’re not careful, it can steal your marriage as well.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The popularity of social media has soared in recent years, and it seems like every month there’s a new social media site that’s vying for your attention. The most popular site, by far, is Facebook, which has allowed many people to reconnect with old friends from high school or college that they’ve lost touch with over the years. However, what happens when these connections begin to spark a bit of romance? Casual flirting can easily lead to online and offline affairs. In fact, according to statistics in Great Britain, one law firm claims that one out of five divorce cases cites Facebook as the cause. If it’s happening there, chances are pretty good that it’s happening in the U.S. as well.
TEXTING
Just about all of us have cell phones. In fact, many people have disconnected their landlines because they only use their cell phones. The problem is that cell phones come with a host of their own issues. Most of them are really “texting machines” as opposed to telephones, which can make it easy to maintain and hide inappropriate messages. Texting causes a great deal of jealousy within marriages, and those feelings of betrayal when a suspected affair comes into the light are very real.
Before these technological advances became so common, married individuals were able to maintain a sense of exclusivity and security. It’s not surprising that people now feel a need to compete with technology for their spouse’s attention. Perhaps you can relate, and you’re facing the same situation in your marriage.
